Compact System - RFxpert

Antenna Measurement in real-time.

RFxpert is the only real-time, compact bench-top antenna measurement equipment to address the challenge

Wireless device designs are becoming more complex. The primary challenges in designing stand alone or embedded antennas arise from performance expectations (gain, efficiency, pattern characteristics, etc.). Increasing number of antenna, components co-located with the antenna, enclosures, electronic sub-assemblies, and PCBs all affect the antenna performance.

In less than a second, RFxpert's unique array of automatically switched probes calculates accurate far-field patterns and radiated power levels based on near-field measurements.

RFxpert's real-time scanning capabilities provide significant design advantages throughout the product lifecycle. Having immediate access to far-field data saves time and cost by reducing reliance upon time consuming and costly anechoic chambers. The unique near-field data provides insight into the root cause of problems. RFxpert allows for more efficient and cost-effective solutions, project cost containment, and accelerated time-to-market.

Cellular

Mobile phone design is becoming increasingly complex, and at the same, faster paced. This creates huge TTM pressures and as such makes early test access even more critical in the design process.

Embedded antenna designs for mobile phones are often custom designed for each model, and the cycles of testing and modification are never finished. Nonetheless, it is desirable for each new antenna design to be implemented and tested. Small changes to the overall system can impact antenna performance and as such must be checked at each stage. Having access to immediate test results in the design environment means that test time is never an issue when considering these changes.

RFxpert enables antenna designers to iterate designs repeatedly in real-time from the convenience of their own lab environment. RFxpert can easily measure mobile phones in regular operating conditions to verify integrated antenna performance, and its unique near-field results provide insights into design behavior. The software can even integrate with a Base Station Emulator to quickly characterize phones over entire operating bands.

RFID

Tag antennas may be packed in close to one another on a shelf, in a crate, on a truck etc. This creates coupling effects that in turn affect the antenna gain, radiation pattern and polarization properties, and may reduce antenna performance.

Some common concerns when designing an RFID antenna are antenna type, impedance, and RF performance when embedded to another object, or when there are other adjacent structures. RFID antenna designers must make sure that they maximize the transfer of power into and out of the device while embedded on the protected object.

RFxpert quickly measures the performance of an antenna design with far-field pattern data and radiated power levels. It also provides immediate insight into the root causes of performance challenges by visualizing resonances and surface currents. RFxpert provides real-time assessment of the impact of design changes or component and packaging modifications right from your bench.

WiFi

Many WiFi, Bluetooth and Zigbee enabled devices make use of off-the-shelf antennas. Although these antennas are often tested by the manufacturer, this is only done in the context of their standard test boards. As soon as the antenna is brought into the real world and integrated with a new working system, the performance may be affected. RFxpert allows the WiFi antenna designer to measure these effects at each stage of the integration process.

The effects of nearby PCBs and cabling can be investigated and the positions can be easily optimized. Sometimes changing the location of a nearby ground plane by a fraction of an inch can have a huge impact on the antenna performance. Final packaging can also be evaluated in terms of antenna performance. The best part is that all of this can be done with real-time speed from the convenience of a lab bench.

MIMO

A MIMO system is composed of multiple radiating structures and is one of the several forms of smart antennas. Designers of MIMO systems may need to analyze diversity, beam forming, or multiplexing issues.

The polarized near-field measurements of RFxpert provide immediate insight into layout optimization problems and potential mutual coupling issues. In the context of multiple antennas working together, there is no better solution. The real-time far-field predictions based on measurement mean that beam forming setups can be analyzed and optimized directly in their working conditions. With RFxpert, this is all done from the convenience of a lab bench, quickly and cost effectively.

Military

Designers of non-standard military antennas need timely access to near-field data. Whether verifying material properties or performance of a novel miniature reflector, access to reliable near-field data is invaluable. Also, any time the far-field varies from expectations, there are no rules of thumb to fall back on. In these situations, near-field analysis can be invaluable.

RFxpert provides this essential analysis in real-time, from the convenience of the designer's lab bench. RFxpert also makes it easy to look for relative radiation levels between parts of the design and pick out unexpected points of resonance.

Sample Lot Testing

However important, testing the true radiated power level of wireless devices in a production line environment has never been technically or economically feasible. Even in small or sample lot quantities, the challenge has always been the excessive time required for rigorous testing and product verification.

With RFxpert, the time required for product verification is reasonable and the integration into existing production environments is simple. Also, the comparison feature of RFxpert facilitates contrast of production lot test results against a golden sample to make immediate pass/fail decisions and improve overall factory operating metrics. The size of the system and the fact that it does not require stringent shielding makes RFxpert an excellent tool for "future proofing" production lines.
